Commodore’s comments
he 2006 season is now well past the half-way mark and it may be of interest to look back at the last few months. We have had some fairly strong winds with very little rain, the lake level has not dropped significantly, and we have enjoyed some really good sailing. Whilst membership numbers remain fairly stable there seem to be fewer boats sailing – either racing or cruising. It would be encouraging to see resurgence in the number of boats on the water. One encouraging sign is that new members continue to join the club, and we are getting considerable interest from possible new recruits for next season.
Although only eight boats competed in the WOCC (Welsh Open Challenger Championship) this year, the event was greatly enjoyed by all who took part. The competitors and their support teams were very appreciative of the warm welcome they were given, and of the testing courses set by Officer of the Day, Peter Davies. May I also thank all those club members who assisted, and helped to make the event such a success.
We were hosts to the Scouts again in June, when they spent an enjoyable weekend at the club, and look forward to their next visit on 17 and 18 September.
The first of this year’s Bill O’Brien Cup Cruiser races was held on 30 July in strong and gusty wind conditions, when four boats competed. There was some close competition, and a great deal of enjoyment. (modesty forbids me to disclose the winner!) It would be nice to see a few more boats taking part in the second leg on 3 September.
Our relationship with the Welsh Water Authority and the fishermen continues to be excellent. It is important to foster good relations with other lake users and the general public. We have only had one incident of vandalism so far this season when two cruisers were broken into on the lake, and some equipment stolen. Let us hope that this nuisance will not recur.
Our training programmes in sailing, power boat handling and First Aid continue to be popular, and I would like to thank Jeff Morgan, and George Billington, and their assistants for all their hard work in running these courses.
May I remind you of our photographic competition, which up to now has attracted very little support, (in fact no support!). Details are set out in the June Newsletter, and the closing date for entries is 1 October 2007.
There are about three months left to the end of the season, and this will be the last news letter of the year. May I ask all members to make an effort to attend the A.G.M. and prize giving on 10 November at the Pwll Gwyn Hotel. If you have any formal proposals to put to the meeting, please send them to the Secretary before the end of September. There is an informal forum after the meeting, when members may introduce topics for discussion. The Committee would welcome any ideas for social activities to be held during the closed season from January to March 2007.
