Message from the Commodore

A warm welcome for all members to the 2002 season, let's hope it will be a great success, without the distraction of foot & mouth or some other form of pestilence.

Key dates for the forthcoming season are: Working Party March 24, Easter Regatta March 31, Solo Open June 16, WOCC July 13 & 14, Holiday Week w/c August 19 and the Autumn Regatta September 8. The Committee will be deliberating what to do over the long weekend which incorporates the additional Jubilee Bank Holiday June 1-4. If you have any sparkling suggestions please let one of the Committee members have them.

My hopes for the forthcoming season are that the activities of the club will run smoothly through active participation of a wide spectrum of members and not just the usual hard core of active members, that our events will be well-supported, that we continue actively to support disabled sailing, that more members will get involved in club racing and that for us geriatric Flying Fifteen sailors the winch becomes properly operational!

In short, I feel that 2002 should be a year in which we consolidate the financial status of the club and get down to the serious business of enjoying the equipment and facilities that previous Commodores and Committees have worked so hard to provide us with.

I guess my "commercial" within this article is to remind you of my request in "Message from the Commodore (December 2001 version)" for volunteers to come forward to fill the jobs which need to be done to keep the club running smoothly. Andrew Shearer has heroically volunteered to maintain the engines of the safety boats and to ensure that the fuel store is well-stocked, but we still need folks to attend to the following: maintenance of the exterior of the clubhouse, grass cutting, winch maintenance, pontoon maintenance, notice boards, a Sailing Captain and a Rear Commodore. With these jobs all unfilled you'll understand why I am relieved that there are no major projects on the horizon this season!

These things don't just happen by magic so please rush to volunteer for a job!

Looking forward to seeing you all again at the Working Party on March 24.

Richard Lewis
